Phonics
"Excellence is achieved by the mastery of the fundamentals."
- Vince Lombardi
Phonics at Athersley North Primary teaches all children to read accurately, fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly and compose their ideas step by step. Through the teaching of systematic phonics, our aim is for children to become fluent readers by the end of Key Stage 1.We are determined that every pupil will learn to read, regardless of their background, needs or abilities. We have clear expectations of pupils’ phonics progress term by term to Year 2, and the school’s phonics programme aligns with these expectations. The sequence of reading books shows a cumulative progression in phonics knowledge that is matched closely to the school’s phonics programme.
We follow with fidelity the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our staff have received Ruth Miskin Training and as a school we are working towards raising standards in reading and writing for our children.
Our Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children will have daily Read, Write, Inc. sessions and we will support our most vulnerable readers with extra one–to–one teaching every day. Children with gaps in their phonic knowledge, reading, writing or fluency in Key Stage 2 are supported through high quality Read, Write, Inc. teaching and intervention.
