We are incredibly proud to share that our very own School Governor, David James Leech, is serving as Barnsley’s current and 155th Mayor.

Having someone so dedicated to our local community also playing such an important civic role is a real honour for Athersley North Primary School. As a Governor, Councillor Leech is a valued member of our school family, offering guidance, encouragement and support as we continue to provide the very best for our children. To see him representing the borough at the highest ceremonial level fills us with pride.

Barnsley has a long and rich civic history. Since the borough was established, a total of 155 mayors have served the community. The very first was Henry Richardson, appointed in 1869, who played a key role in shaping the foundations of the borough we know today. In 1956, history was made again when Mary Brannon became Barnsley’s first female mayor — an important milestone in the town’s story.

Today, we are delighted that Councillor David Leech continues that proud tradition of service. His commitment to Barnsley, and to our school community, reflects the strong values of leadership, responsibility and care that we aim to instil in our pupils every day.

We are honoured to have a Mayor who is not only representing Barnsley across the borough, but who is also an active and supportive part of life here at Athersley North.

Congratulations, Councillor Leech — from all of us at Athersley North Primary School!
