A Night of Celebration

It was an unforgettable evening at the Rapid Response Proud of Barnsley Awards at the Metrodome Arena, as Athersley North Primary School was honoured in the most moving way.

There were tears in the audience as the Mayor of Barnsley, Dave Leech, announced that his special award would be presented to our school. Speaking to almost 600 guests, he shared why Athersley North had been chosen.

Reflecting on the tragic road accident in the summer of 2024 that claimed the lives of six people — four from the same family — the Mayor spoke about the profound impact on our community. He paid tribute to Shane Roller and Shannen Morgan, and their children, Rubie and Lillie, whose loss was deeply felt by us all.

He shared how our school community stepped forward without hesitation.

In the darkest of times, Athersley North became a place of care, compassion and togetherness — not only for the immediate family, but for the wider community too. The Mayor spoke of how staff played a vital role in supporting others through unimaginable grief, and how, more than a year on, the school continues to honour and remember Rubie and Lillie with love and respect.

The award came as a complete surprise to our staff and Governors. As they went up to collect it, the entire arena rose to its feet in a standing ovation — a truly humbling and emotional moment that none of us will ever forget.

We are incredibly proud of our staff, our Governors and our whole school community. This recognition reflects the kindness, strength and unity that defines Athersley North.
